Thursday – March 12th, 2009 - Mendoza

Our representative will greet your group this morning, after your arrival, at El Plumerillo Airport (MDZ) in Mendoza, Argentina and provide a private transfer to the Vista Alba Valley Hotel for six nights’ accommodations …  a beautiful lodge in the wine country.

First established below the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains in 1561, Mendoza has developed into a principle business center of Argentina’s interior. Recently recognized as a distinguished member of Great Wine Capitals, this province is largely responsible for making Argentina the fifth largest wine producer on earth. While the region might be termed Cuyo (Desert Land), Mendoza is actually a fertile paradise for wine investors and connoisseurs thanks to superb irrigation canals. For many, there is nothing more peaceful than to unwind in the countryside, sipping a tall glass of traditional burgundy Malbec, while admiring the sunset across the Andean horizon. As the industry is thriving right now, it is astonishing to believe that the first vines were planted here by Jesuit missionaries nearly five centuries ago.

This afternoon, following a pleasant rest at your hotel, your group will receive a special wine tasting event to welcome you to the region. Ultra premium wines from five separate properties (not included among your future visits) will be presented at your hotel specifically for WineSellar travelers. Individual representatives and sommeliers from Renacer, Finca La Celia, Viña Alicia, Alta Vista and El Porvenir (of Cafayate) will conduct this social gathering.

Welcome dinner at Winery and restaurant Tapiz.

Overnight at the Vista Alba Hotel.

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Friday – March 13th, 2009 - Mendoza

Breakfast at Vista Alba Hotel.

This morning, our representative will lead your group into Luján de Cuyo, home of Malbec and many prestigious wineries. With Andean peaks in the background, you will enter the sub-regions of Agrelo and Perdriel, known as the most expensive vineyard terrain in Argentina. Visit Enrique Foster, a brand new property already making a positive impression on the international wine scene. The Spanish-American owner has openly declared his ambition to create the nation’s finest Malbec. With vines more than 80 years old, combined with the winemaking intellect of Mauricio Lorca, your group will be treated to a special visit here. While closed to public tourism, WineSellar travelers will enjoy glasses of Ique, Reserva, and Limited Edicion – Foster’s three leading brands. Next, you will visit Achaval Ferrer, the first winery of Argentina to receive 96 points by Wine Spectator. With an operation defined by passion and style, you will not forget the taste of their Quimara and Altamira ranges, in addition to a fascinating barrel and bottle tasting in the cellar. To conclude your day, group travelers will discover Carlos Pulenta’s Vistalba, a remarkable property blending local wood and stone into its architecture. Following a tour of the winery, you will appreciate a great selection of blended wines as served with a divine lunch at La Bourgogne. Here, exceptional food will be complimented with Corte B and Corte A wines.

Evening at leisure and overnight at the Vista Alba Hotel.

(Breakfast & lunch included)

Saturday – March 14th, 2009 - Mendoza

Breakfast at Vista Alba Hotel.

This morning, we invite you to explore the beautiful city of Mendoza. Our representative will lead you along your journey as you learn of local culture and history. Visit Plaza de Independencia, the centerpiece of downtown Mendoza, with its towering palm trees, flowing fountains, and artisan market. Las Heras Street Museum and the indoor Central Food Market will also be included in your tour. Just outside the city, your group will enter the overwhelming Parque General San Martín, distinguished for its infinite sports clubs, playing fields, provincial zoo, and Greek-style amphitheater. Perhaps the greatest highlight is the monumental statue that crowns Cerro de La Gloria, where Lady Liberty breaks her chains of bondage as a symbol of San Martin’s victory and the region’s liberation from Spain.

To end your tour, group members will have time to stroll the three bustling blocks of Sarmiento Pedestrian Street, site of several boutique shops and coffee houses and open markets.

Afterwards, we will provide a private transfer to the home of Tom and Judi Conel for a private asado prepared by Lori and Gary’s dear friends in Chacras de Coria.
This event will start at 3pm and go until we have enjoyed ourselves to the fullest!  Tom and Judi Conel will be our hosts for a warm and welcome afternoon and evening.  They wanted you to see and experience what a traditional Argentina feast and fiesta is like.

Overnight at the Vista Alba Hotel.

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Sunday – March 15th, 2009 - Mendoza

Breakfast at Vista Alba Hotel.

With an early morning start, your group will ascend the surrounding Andes Mountains, beginning with a picturesque drive parallel to both Mendoza River and the former Trans-Andean railway, once facilitating travel between Argentina and neighboring Chile. After passing Potrerillos Dam, group members will relax for a brief coffee break in the village of Uspallata. Your expedition continues at an altitude of 9,300 feet where travelers will now enjoy a casual walk through the bracing air as condors soar overhead. From here, you will be in awe of Aconcagua peak, seen in the distance, standing as the highest mountain outside the Himalayas at 13,000 feet. Finally, our representative will introduce you to Puente del Inca, a unique natural phenomenon created by centuries of mineral deposits and resulting in a geological wonder. During your return, we will prepare a rustic traditional Argentinian lunch that will make your mouth water!

Evening at leisure and overnight at Vista Alba.

(Breakfast & lunch included)

Monday – March 16th, 2009 - Mendoza

Breakfast at Vista Alba Hotel.

This morning, our representative will lead your group into the region of Maipú, where many early immigrants first settled on parcels of free land. Visit Hacienda del Plata, a former estancia founded in the 18th century. Following generations of intensive labor to cultivate the barren land, this property now produces outstanding Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Here, you will enjoy fabulous tasting from both barrels and bottles. Next, your group will visit Benegas, built in 1901, and later renovated and equipped for high quality wine making. Aurelio Monte’s famous Kaiken wines are made here. With vines between 20 and 80 years old, you will savor the taste of both Benegas and Benegas Estripe. Following a special olive tasting, your group will now dine at Almacen del Sur, perhaps the finest restaurant in the entire province of Mendoza. Nestled in the middle of a market garden, this property grows its own vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Unwind, absorb the activities of the day, and enjoy your delightful lunch in this charming location.

* Dinner at a very special place tonight.  It goes only by it’s address “743”.  It is different and not known by tourist.  It is more held for the upper class Argentines.  Our friends, Tom & Judi, tell us that it’s really quite an experience as it is a 15-course pre fixe (12 small interesting courses plus 3 desserts) and about 5-6 chosen wines to match the food.  The chef is the head chef from Ruca Malen.  The waiter will explain each dish and why the wine is chosen.  Tom is setting this special treat up for us!

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Tuesday – March 17th, 2009 - Mendoza

Breakfast at Vista Alba Hotel.

This morning, our representative will lead your group into Valle de Uco, a flourishing valley where grapevines, walnuts, and various fruits grow in abundance. Visit O. Fournier, a stunning and futuristic wine property, distinguished for its unique layout with conical tanks, an immense underground cellar, and a “launch pad” roof. Following your tour, group travelers will taste Urban, B Crux and top A Crux wines. Following this memorable experience where space-age meets vitivinculture, your group will visit Andeluna, a deluxe private bodega owned by American Herman Ward Lay of snack food fame. This modern establishment blends gorgeous architecture and breathtaking views, creating one of the country’s most inviting visitor centers. Sit at the bar and savor the flavor of their Pasionado Grand Reserve 2003 and Cabernet Franc Limited Edition 2003 (earning Andeluna the Grand Trophy award from Decanter Magazine). A short drive down the road will bring your group to Altus, a rural winery and host to Bistro La Tupiña, an intimate cottage restaurant where talented young chefs prepare delectable cuisine over an open fire. During this special lunch, fine wine will be served and a traditional folclórico show will provided for WineSellar travelers. Such a presentation will consist of gauchos, dancers, and a masterful demonstration of horsemanship.

Adios dinner from the Mendoza wine country at Maceratta Trattortia … they are giving us their private dining room for the evening.

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)

Welcome to Buenos Aires, termed the Paris of Latin America, and recognized as the cultural center of the Argentine Republic. This bustling metropolis rests along the southern shores of Rio de la Plata, making it both the nation’s largest city and port. First established in 1536, Buenos Aires has since encountered numerous political battles, combined with intense urban development. Today, the city is still defined by strong European influences, all of which are quite evident in local cuisine and architecture. Perhaps the greatest attraction is the provocative tango that was created here years ago, luring travelers from all over the world for its sensual style and melancholic rhythms that permeate the air.

This afternoon, we invite you to discover the principle landmarks of elegant Buenos Aires. Your personal guide will provide a private tour through the vibrant Boca neighborhood, overflowing with street artists and dancers performing alongside the brilliantly-colored homes of Calle Caminito. Witness the nation’s presidential palace, La Casa Rosada, and the historic Plaza de Mayo which has hosted numerous political protests and celebrations in recent decades. Admire the extravagant Recoleta Cemetery, final resting place of Evita Perón and several national icons. Lunch will be provided during this excursion at La Bándola, a gastronomical delight in Palermo. Combined with your meal, we will provide a brief tour of the kitchen, including a discussion of proper meat cuts and recipes.

Entire evening at leisure.

Overnight back at Hotel Bel Air .

Your personal guide will accompany you along the lush tropical basin of the world’s largest waterfalls (in terms of volume). Here, 275 separate cascades come crashing down along the national border with Brazil, with the grand point of focus termed “Devil’s Throat”. The surrounding jungle is home to hundreds of unique bird and plant species, not to mention multi-colored butterflies fluttering through the mist. In addition, your group will embark on the Great Adventure. Travel through the rainforest, observing the diverse flora growing below the thick jungle canopy. Once you arrive to the water below, board a zodiac boat and sail upstream in the lower Iguazú River. Sunday – March 22nd, 2009 - Misiones

Breakfast at Hotel Panoramic.

Today, you will venture into the open countryside of Misiones province to uncover the religious history of Argentina’s northeast territory. Jesuit missionaries first arrived in the early 17th century, settling across the area and converting thousands of natives from the Guaraní community. Several mission ruins, left behind following the expulsions of 1777, now grace the landscape. Few ruins have been restored, though San Ignacio Mini is the best known site for tourists. Red sandstone and carefully carved columns define this UNESCO World Heritage Site, now quiet, abandoned, and partially collapsed. First founded in 1610 (in what is now Brazil), the mission of San Ignacio settled at last in its current location after disheartening slave raids in 1696. Your personal guide will accompany your group during this excursion.

Including in today’s tour will be a brief visit to the Wanda Mines of Misiones, located approx. 25 miles from Puerto Iguazú. Often described as an open pit mine, precious jewels and gemstones were first discovered here only decades ago. Group members will encounter large amounts of quartz crystal, topaz, and amethyst. We’ll be stopping for a nice lunch during our day.

This evening, you will dine in El Quincho del Tio Querido, a very popular steakhouse located in the heart of Puerto Iguazú.

Overnight back at Hotel Panoramic.

(Breakfast, lunch & dinner included)
